Hire a Professional

“If you think hiring a professional is expensive, wait until you see what an amateur costs you.”

I have no idea who said this, but it’s one of my favorite quotes and over the years I’ve literally experienced the truth of this statement more times that I can count.

FTC Safeguards Rule (18)

I was recently meeting with a friend considering a remodeling project and I advised him to hire a good designer, a reputable contractor, and to run all plans by his experienced real estate agent (me) before pulling the trigger. I immediately sensed his discomfort and being the honest professional that I am, I simply emphasized that hiring professionals will not only save you money, the end result will be worth much more than you spend. In other words, forget the price, consider the value.

After providing a few contacts for him to call, I shared a few stories giving specific examples to drive home my message. “I know what you are thinking,” I said, “you think you are smarter and savvier than the next person, but you don’t know what you don’t know.” I wasn’t trying to insult my friend and repeat client of many years, I really wanted to prevent him from making costly mistakes and reminded him of the mistakes he had to literally pay for when he did cut a few corners. That was, of course, before we knew one another. At the end of the day, none of us know what we don’t know and while most of us strive to save money and be good stewards of our money, we often turn out to be penny-wise, but pound-foolish.

What are you paying for when you hire a professional? Their time? Yes, perhaps, but more specifically, you are paying for all the time they’ve spent acquiring their skills and tradecraft. Whether it is an interior designer, general contractor, tile installer, or cabinet maker, hiring a professional is always the best decision. The end result is well worth it.

Likewise, hiring an experienced Realtor is crucial for several compelling reasons:

  1. Expertise and Knowledge: Real estate professionals bring extensive knowledge and expertise to the table. From market trends and property values to legal intricacies, professionals are well-versed in the complexities of real estate transactions. This expertise ensures that the process is executed smoothly and efficiently.
  2. Guidance: There are numerous tasks to manage whether buying or selling a property and many of those tasks have strict deadlines to meet. An experienced real estate professional will provide step-by-step instructions and coach you through the process ensuring what needs to be done is done and on schedule.
  3. Negotiation Skills: Real estate transactions often involve intricate negotiations. Professionals are trained to negotiate on behalf of their clients, maximizing their interests while maintaining a fair and ethical approach. Their negotiation skills can result in favorable deals for buyers and sellers alike.
  4. Market Insight: Real estate professionals have a deep understanding of the local market. They can provide valuable insights into neighborhood dynamics, upcoming developments, and potential investment opportunities. This knowledge enables clients to make informed decisions about their real estate transactions.
  5. Legal Protection: Real estate transactions involve legal complexities and paperwork. Real estate professionals are not attorneys and cannot provide legal advice, however they are trained to ensure all documentation is accurate and compliant. This legal protection minimizes the risk of disputes or legal challenges down the line.
  6. Time and Efficiency: Real estate transactions can be time-consuming and demanding. Real estate professionals streamline the process, handling tasks such as property inspections, marketing, negotiations, and manage the very important financing details allowing clients to focus on other aspects of their lives or businesses.
  7. Network and Resources: Real estate professionals have extensive networks that can be leveraged for the benefit of their clients. From connections with other professionals in the industry to access to potential buyers or sellers, their network enhances the reach and effectiveness of the sales process. When an unexpected issue arises, an experienced real estate professional will know who to call in a pinch.
  8. Emotional Buffer: Buying or selling a property can be an emotionally charged experience. Real estate professionals act as a buffer between clients, helping to manage expectations, resolve conflicts, and maintain a level-headed approach throughout the process.

The bottomline is remembering that you get what you pay for and hiring a professional to help you navigate a process you aren’t familiar with means you will avoid pitfalls that can be costly.
